States Of Matter

Overview

Everything around you, from the air you breathe to the chair you sit on, exists as a solid, a liquid, or a gas. These three states look and behave very differently, yet they are all made of the same tiny particles. The difference lies in how those particles are arranged, how they move, and how much energy they carry.

In this lesson you will explore the particle model for each state, learn the names and conditions for every change of state, and discover how experiments with coloured solutions and diffusing gases provide direct evidence that particles are real and always moving. You will also meet the key vocabulary of solutions: solvent, solute, saturated solution, and more.

Objectives

  1. Understand the three states of matter in terms of the arrangement, movement and energy of the particles
  2. Understand the interconversions between the three states of matter in terms of the names, how they are achieved, and the changes in arrangement, movement and energy
  3. Understand how the results of experiments involving the dilution of coloured solutions and diffusion of gases can be explained
  4. Know what is meant by the terms: solvent, solute, solution, saturated solution

Lesson Note

Drop a sugar cube into a cup of tea and it vanishes. Leave a jar of perfume open and the scent fills the room. These everyday observations only make sense if matter is built from tiny particles that are constantly moving. The particle model explains why solids hold their shape, why liquids flow, and why gases spread to fill any container.
