Sketching Graphs On A Calculator

Overview

The graphic display calculator turns algebra into pictures. Type in a function and you can see its shape, read values from a table, find where it crosses the axes, and pick out its highest and lowest points, all in seconds. For the International syllabus this is a core skill, not an optional extra.

In this lesson you will learn the general calculator method for each key task: sketching a graph, building a table of values, plotting points, finding zeros and turning points, finding where two graphs meet, and locating the vertex of a quadratic. The steps are described in words so they work on any model of calculator.

Objectives

  1. Use a graphic display calculator to: (a) sketch the graph of a function (b) produce a table of values (c) plot points (d) find zeros, local maxima or local minima (e) find the intersection of the graphs of functions (f) find the vertex of a quadratic.

Lesson Note

Many real functions are too awkward to analyse neatly by hand, but a calculator handles them instantly. Knowing how to read a graph from the screen, find its key features and trust those readings is a genuine twenty-first-century skill, and the International syllabus examines it directly. It also gives you a fast, independent way to check work done algebraically.
