Farm Tools

Overview

A farmer's hand tools are the everyday partners of the job: a hoe to weed a row, a spanner to tighten a loose bolt on the plough, a file to put an edge back on a blunt blade. Used correctly and kept in good condition, a simple kit of tools does an enormous amount of work; neglected, the same tools rust, blunt and break just when they are needed most.

In this lesson you will learn the correct use of common farm tools, from the saw, hammer and screwdriver to the file, spanner and sprayer, and the hand tools used to cultivate the soil. Just as important, you will learn how each tool is maintained, cleaned, oiled, sharpened and stored, so that it stays safe, works well and lasts for years.

Objectives

  1. (a) describe the use and maintenance of saw, hammer, screwdriver, file, spanner, sprayers and hand tools for cultivation.

Lesson Note

The 0600 paper expects you to know both the use and the maintenance of named tools, and to explain why the maintenance matters. The pattern is the same for every tool: it does a particular job, and it needs particular care, usually cleaning, protecting metal from rust, keeping cutting edges sharp, and storing it safely. Learn that pattern and you can answer about any tool, even one you have not met before.
