Equation Of A Straight Line

Overview

A straight line is the simplest graph there is, yet a single equation captures every point on it. Learn to read that equation and you can picture the line instantly: how steep it is and where it crosses the y-axis.

In this lesson you will work with the slope-intercept form \(y = mx + b\), find the slope and y-intercept from an equation, and build the equation of a line from its graph or from given facts. This is one of the most heavily used skills in the whole course.

Objectives

  1. Use and interpret the equation of a straight line in the form y = mx + b, and (Extended) obtain the equation of a line.
