Writing: Communicate In Writing
Overview
The Writing paper is the only component where you are marked on your English twice. Every one of its four questions carries a separate mark for Content and Communication and a separate mark for Language, and across the paper those come to 28 marks and 32 marks. Two candidates can write the same ideas and finish thirty marks apart. Two others can write flawless English and finish thirty marks apart the other way, because neither covered the bullet points.
What makes this paper learnable is that the exam board publishes the descriptions it marks against, band by band, and this lesson prints all of them. You will see the four tasks with their word ranges and mark splits, the eight published grids in full, one answer written three times at three different standards with the descriptors used to name what changed, and a repair pass on the ten errors that most often hold a Language mark down.
Objectives
- In order to meet the requirements of AO2, students are expected to:
- communicate effectively in writing for a variety of purposes across a range of specified contexts
- write short texts, using simple sentences and familiar language accurately to convey meaning and exchange information
- produce clear and coherent text of extended length to present facts and express ideas and opinions appropriately for different purposes and in different settings
- make accurate use of a variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures, including some more complex forms, to describe and narrate with reference to past, present and future events
- manipulate the language, using and adapting a variety of structures and vocabulary with increasing accuracy and fluency for new purposes, including using appropriate style and register
- make independent, creative and more complex use of the language to explain, inform, describe, argue or persuade.
