Finishing

Overview

A finish is the last thing you do to a product and the first thing the user sees and touches. Finishing is far more than decoration: it protects the material from moisture, corrosion and wear, it improves how the surface feels and looks, and it can add colour and meaning. Choosing a finish that suits both the material and the job is a marked skill in 0445.

This note runs through the finishes used on each class of material: papers and boards, woods, metals and polymers. You will see why some materials need a finish to survive at all, why others need almost none, and how surface preparation is the step that decides whether any finish succeeds or fails.

Objectives

  1. show knowledge of a range of finishes for the classes of materials listed in section 1.5.

Lesson Note

Every finish does one or more of three jobs. It can protect the material from its environment: paint and oil keep water out of wood, galvanising stops steel rusting, lacquer stops brass tarnishing. It can improve the surface by making it smoother, more hard-wearing or easier to clean. And it can decorate, adding colour, pattern, shine or texture for visual appeal. A good answer always links the finish to the need: an outdoor bench is painted mainly to protect it from rain, whereas a wooden toy is finished mainly so it is smooth, safe and washable.

Lesson Evaluation

Congratulations on completing the lesson on Finishing. Now that youve explored the key concepts and ideas, its time to put your knowledge to the test. This section offers a variety of practice questions designed to reinforce your understanding and help you gauge your grasp of the material.

You will encounter a mix of question types, including multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, and essay questions. Each question is thoughtfully crafted to assess different aspects of your knowledge and critical thinking skills.

Use this evaluation section as an opportunity to reinforce your understanding of the topic and to identify any areas where you may need additional study. Don't be discouraged by any challenges you encounter; instead, view them as opportunities for growth and improvement.

  1. What are the three main reasons for applying a finish to a product? A. Protect, improve and decorate B. Cut, shape and form C. Measure, mark and cut D. Cast, mould and weld Answer: A
  2. Which finish protects steel even where the coating is scratched, because the zinc corrodes first? A. Varnishing B. Galvanising C. Self-colouring D. Waxing Answer: B
  3. Why does a polymer product such as a toy brick often need no added finish? A. Polymers cannot be painted B. The colour is mixed into the polymer and the mould gives the surface texture C. Polymers never need protecting D. Finishes do not stick to plastics Answer: B
  4. Which finishing process thickens the natural oxide on aluminium and can dye it a colour? A. Galvanising B. Powder coating C. Anodising D. Varnishing Answer: C
  5. Why is surface preparation essential before painting metal? A. It makes the metal heavier B. It removes grease and roughens the surface so the finish can key and adhere C. It changes the metal into a polymer D. It is not actually necessary Answer: B
