Biological Molecules

Overview

The food you eat, the muscles that move you, and the membranes that hold your cells together are all made from the same small set of biological molecules. Understanding how carbohydrates, proteins and lipids are built, tested for, and broken down is central to biology.

This lesson covers the chemical elements in each molecule group, how small units join to form large ones, practical food tests you need to know, and the role of enzymes as biological catalysts, including how temperature and pH affect their activity.

Objectives

  1. Identify the chemical elements present in carbohydrates, proteins and lipids (fats and oils)
  2. Describe the structure of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids as large molecules made up from smaller basic units
  3. Investigate food samples for the presence of glucose, starch, protein and fat
  4. Understand the role of enzymes as biological catalysts in metabolic reactions
  5. Understand how temperature changes can affect enzyme function, including changes to the shape of active site
  6. Investigate how enzyme activity can be affected by changes in temperature
  7. Understand how enzyme function can be affected by changes in pH altering the active site

Lesson Note

Every reaction in a living organism depends on molecules built from just a handful of chemical elements. A loaf of bread, a steak, and a pat of butter look completely different, yet each is assembled from carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, with proteins adding nitrogen (and sometimes sulfur). Knowing which elements are present, how the molecules are structured, and how to detect them in the lab gives you the toolkit for the rest of biology.
