Metallic Bonding

Overview

Metals can be hammered into sheets, drawn into wires and carry electricity through every cable in your home. These shared properties point to a single kind of bonding found in all metals, one that lets atoms hold together while still letting electrons flow freely.

In this lesson you will learn what metallic bonding is, how it produces a lattice of positive ions in a sea of moving electrons, and how this structure explains why metals conduct electricity and can be bent and shaped without breaking.

Objectives

  1. [Supplement] Describe metallic bonding as the electrostatic attraction between the positive ions in a giant metallic lattice and a ‘sea’ of delocalised electrons.
  2. [Supplement] Explain in terms of structure and bonding the properties of metals: (a) good electrical conductivity (b) malleability and ductility.

Lesson Note
