Circulatory Systems

Overview

Every one of your cells needs a constant delivery of oxygen and food and a constant removal of waste. With billions of cells, diffusion alone is far too slow, so animals use a circulatory system: blood, driven by a pump through a network of vessels, with valves to keep it flowing one way.

In this lesson you will learn what a circulatory system is. Extended students will compare the single circulation of a fish with the double circulation of a mammal, and discover why passing the blood through the heart twice gives mammals a real advantage.
