Government Macroeconomic Intervention

Overview

Governments do not run an economy for fun; they steer it toward goals. They want the economy to grow, jobs to be plentiful, prices stable, trade balanced, incomes fairly shared and the environment protected. These are the macroeconomic aims, and they shape almost every policy a government announces.

In this lesson you will learn each of the main macroeconomic aims, why governments choose them, and a crucial complication: the aims can clash. Pushing hard for one, such as full employment, can set back another, such as stable prices. Understanding these conflicts is what separates a good answer from a great one.

Objectives

  1. the macroeconomic aims of government: - economic growth - full employment/low unemployment - stable prices/low inflation - balance of payments stability - redistribution of income - environmental sustainability
  2. reasons behind the choice of aims and the criteria that governments may set for meeting each aim
  3. possible conflicts between macroeconomic aims: - full employment and stable prices - economic growth and environmental sustainability - full employment and balance of payments stability

Lesson Note

Every budget, interest-rate decision and tax change is aimed at one or more of these goals, so knowing them lets you make sense of real economic news. The conflicts between aims are a favourite of examiners, because explaining a trade-off shows genuine economic understanding rather than memorised lists.
