Algebraic Manipulation

Overview

Algebraic manipulation is the backbone of the Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics course. It covers the skills you need to rewrite, simplify and rearrange algebraic expressions: substituting values into formulas, collecting like terms, expanding brackets, and factorising. These techniques appear in almost every topic from equations and inequalities to coordinate geometry and calculus.

At Foundation tier you will master substitution, single-bracket expansion, common-factor extraction and double-bracket expansion, alongside factorising quadratics of the form \(x^2 + bx + c\). Higher tier extends to triple-bracket expansion, factorising \(ax^2 + bx + c\), manipulating algebraic fractions, completing the square, and constructing algebraic proofs.

Objectives

  1. Evaluate expressions by substituting numerical values for letters
  2. Collect like terms
  3. Multiply a single term over a bracket
  4. Take out common factors
  5. Expand the product of two simple linear expressions
  6. Understand the concept of a quadratic expression and be able to factorise such expressions (limited to x^2 + bx + c at Foundation)
  7. [Higher] Expand the product of two or more linear expressions
  8. [Higher] Factorise quadratic expressions including those of the form ax^2 + bx + c
  9. [Higher] Manipulate algebraic fractions where the numerator and/or the denominator can be numeric, linear or quadratic
  10. [Higher] Complete the square for a given quadratic expression
  11. [Higher] Use algebra to support and construct proofs

Lesson Note

Imagine handing someone a recipe where every quantity is labelled with a letter instead of a number. You could swap in any set of ingredients and the instructions would still work. That is exactly what an algebraic expression does: it captures a relationship between quantities so that you can plug in different values, rearrange the formula, or simplify it into something easier to work with. Mastering this toolkit is the single most transferable skill in IGCSE Mathematics.
