Sexual Reproduction In Plants

Overview

A flower is a plant's reproductive factory. Behind the petals that catch your eye is a precise arrangement of male and female parts whose job is to bring two sex cells together and make a seed. Learn to name those parts and say what each one does, and a cut flower stops being decoration and becomes a machine you can read.

In this lesson you will identify every part of an insect-pollinated flower, give each its function, and see how a wind-pollinated flower is built differently for a different delivery method. You will define pollination precisely, separate self-pollination from cross-pollination, and weigh up what each means for the future of a whole population.

Objectives

  1. Identify in diagrams and images and draw the following parts of an insect-pollinated flower: sepals, petals, stamens, filaments, anthers, carpels, style, stigma, ovary and ovules
  2. State the functions of the structures listed in 16.3.1
  3. Identify in diagrams and images and describe the anthers and stigmas of a wind-pollinated flower
  4. Distinguish between the pollen grains of insect-pollinated and wind-pollinated flowers
  5. Describe pollination as the transfer of pollen grains from an anther to a stigma
  6. [Supplement] Describe self-pollination as the transfer of pollen grains from the anther of a flower to the stigma of the same flower or a different flower on the same plant
  7. [Supplement] Describe cross-pollination as the transfer of pollen grains from the anther of a flower to the stigma of a flower on a different plant of the same species
  8. [Supplement] Discuss the potential effects of self-pollination and cross-pollination on a population, in terms of variation, capacity to respond to changes in the environment and reliance on pollinators

Lesson Note

Almost everything you eat begins with a pollinated flower: the grain in bread, the rice in a bowl, every fruit and most vegetables. Knowing how a flower is built and how pollen reaches the stigma explains why bees matter, why some crops need wind, and why plant breeders care so much about which flower's pollen lands where. In the exam, flower questions reward precise naming and the matching of structure to function.
