Range Of Grammatical Structures
Overview
One of the clearest signs of a strong writer is variety in sentence structure. A piece built only from short, simple sentences sounds flat and young, however correct it is. A piece that mixes simple, compound and complex sentences, and uses structures for comparison, condition, reason and result, reads as the work of a confident user of English, and the marks reflect it.
This lesson shows you how to reach beyond the simple sentence without losing control: how to combine short sentences, how to build useful complex structures, and how to keep them accurate. You will compare a basic paragraph with an upgraded one and see exactly which structures lift the language mark.
