The Periodic Table

Overview

The Periodic Table is chemistry's most powerful reference tool. Over a hundred elements are arranged in a single chart that reveals patterns in their properties, predicts how they react, and connects directly to the electron configurations you studied in the previous topic.

In this lesson you will learn how the table is organised by atomic number, groups and periods, deduce electronic configurations for the first twenty elements, classify metals and non-metals by their properties, and discover why elements in the same group share similar chemistry.

Objectives

  1. understand how elements are arranged in the Periodic Table: - in order of atomic number - in groups and periods.
  2. understand how to deduce the electronic configurations of the first 20 elements from their positions in the Periodic Table
  3. understand how to use electrical conductivity and the acid-base character of oxides to classify elements as metals or non-metals
  4. identify an element as a metal or a non-metal according to its position in the Periodic Table
  5. understand how the electronic configuration of a main group element is related to its position in the Periodic Table
  6. understand why elements in the same group of the Periodic Table have similar chemical properties
  7. understand why the noble gases (Group 0) do not readily react

Lesson Note

In 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev arranged the known elements by atomic weight and noticed a repeating pattern: elements with similar properties appeared at regular intervals. He left gaps for elements that had not yet been discovered, and when gallium and germanium were later found, their properties matched his predictions almost exactly. The modern table arranges elements by atomic number rather than weight, but the core idea is the same: position reveals behaviour.
