Discrete And Continuous Data

Overview

Before you draw a single chart or work out an average, you need to know what kind of data you are dealing with. Numerical data comes in two flavours: discrete data that you count, and continuous data that you measure. The difference decides which methods and graphs are sensible.

In this lesson you will learn to distinguish discrete from continuous data with plenty of clear examples. It is a short but important idea, because getting it right keeps every later statistical step honest and tells you whether a value in between two readings could ever occur.
