The Periodic Table

Overview

Over a hundred elements have been discovered, and the Periodic Table organises every one of them in a pattern that reveals their properties at a glance. Knowing where an element sits in the table tells you whether it is a metal or a non-metal, how many outer-shell electrons it has, and how it is likely to react.

In this lesson you will learn how elements are arranged by atomic number into groups and periods, how to use the table to distinguish metals from non-metals, and why elements in the same group share similar chemical properties.

Objectives

  1. Understand how elements are arranged in the Periodic Table in order of atomic number, in groups and periods
  2. Identify an element as a metal or a non-metal according to its position in the Periodic Table

Lesson Note

In 1869, Dmitri Mendeleev arranged the known elements by atomic mass and noticed a repeating pattern of properties. The modern Periodic Table keeps that insight but orders elements by atomic number (the number of protons in the nucleus) instead. This ordering produces columns and rows that group elements with similar behaviour together.

Lesson Evaluation

Congratulations on completing the lesson on The Periodic Table. Now that youve explored the key concepts and ideas, its time to put your knowledge to the test. This section offers a variety of practice questions designed to reinforce your understanding and help you gauge your grasp of the material.

You will encounter a mix of question types, including multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, and essay questions. Each question is thoughtfully crafted to assess different aspects of your knowledge and critical thinking skills.

Use this evaluation section as an opportunity to reinforce your understanding of the topic and to identify any areas where you may need additional study. Don't be discouraged by any challenges you encounter; instead, view them as opportunities for growth and improvement.
