How Effectively Did The United States Contain The Spread Of Communism?

Overview

After 1947 the United States built its whole Cold War strategy around one idea: containment, the policy of stopping communism from spreading any further. But how well did it actually work? In Korea it held the line, in Cuba it faced down nuclear missiles ninety miles from Florida, and in Vietnam it suffered its most painful defeat. The record is mixed, and that is exactly what makes it such a rich topic.

This lesson examines containment in action through three case studies: the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the long war in Vietnam. You will learn what the United States did, why it did it, and how to judge each case as a success or a failure, before reaching the balanced verdict on the whole policy that Cambridge examiners are looking for.

Objectives

  1. The United States and events in Korea, 1950-53
  2. The United States and events in Cuba, 1959-62
  3. American involvement in Vietnam, 1955-75
  4. Case studies of: - American reactions to North Korea’s invasion of South Korea, the involvement of the UN, the course of the war to 1953 - American reactions to the Cuban Revolution, including the Missile Crisis and its aftermath - American involvement in the Vietnam War, including reasons for involvement, tactics and strategy, reasons for withdrawal

Lesson Note

Containment was the thread that ran through American foreign policy for more than forty years, and the three case studies in this topic show it at its most dramatic. They include the only moment the world came close to nuclear war and the war that divided American society like no other. Judging how effective containment was teaches the historian's skill of measuring a policy against its own aims, then weighing successes against failures to reach a fair overall verdict.
