Location Photography

Overview

In a studio you switch the light on. On location the light is already on, it was set by the weather and the hour, it will change while you are working, and you cannot turn it up. What you can do is know when it will be good, get there before it is, and carry only what you can lift.

This note is about the second kind of planning. It covers the recce, reading a site for its light and its lines, metering in difficult conditions, permission and safety, the small kit that actually earns its weight, and the site-specific shoot plan the specification names by name. Studio photography is the companion area of study, where everything must be built. Here everything is already there, and the work is negotiation.

Objectives

  1. Use subject matter found or placed to manipulate the formal elements within an existing environment
  2. Use a range of location photography materials, tools and techniques such as lighting and light metering, developing site-specific shoot plans

Lesson Note

The specification defines this area of study as using subject matter found or placed to manipulate the formal elements within an existing environment, with lighting and light metering and the development of site-specific shoot plans as its techniques. That phrase, found or placed, describes two quite different working methods that both count.
