Safe Working Practices
Overview
A graphics workshop looks gentler than a metal shop, but a craft knife, a guillotine, a laser cutter and a hot glue gun all bite. Safe working practice is the set of habits and equipment that lets you cut, fold, print, glue and machine graphic materials without hurting yourself, the people near you, or the product. It is examined directly, and it is the first thing a good designer-maker thinks about before picking up a tool.
This note covers the safe use of the hand tools, power tools, machinery and computer-aided manufacture (CAM) equipment found in graphic products work - from the steel rule and craft knife to the rotary trimmer, vinyl cutter and laser cutter - and the personal protective equipment (PPE) you select and wear for each task. The aim is not to memorise rules for their own sake but to understand the hazard behind each rule, so you can work safely with any tool you meet.

- select and use appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) when working practically.
