Land Preparation

Overview

Before a single seed goes into the ground, a farmer has already done much of the work that decides the harvest. Land preparation is the set of jobs that turn rough or weedy ground into a clean, crumbly seedbed where seeds can germinate and roots can spread. Get it right and the crop comes up evenly, smothers fewer weeds and reaches the water and nutrients it needs. Get it wrong and even the best seed struggles.

In this lesson you will learn how new land is opened up by stumping and clearing, and then how the soil itself is worked. You will see the difference between primary cultivation, the first deep working that ploughing or digging gives, and secondary cultivation, the lighter harrowing or raking that breaks the clods into a fine tilth. You will learn what each operation does to the soil and why the order matters, whether the work is done by hand or by machine.

Objectives

  1. (a) describe land preparation by stumping and clearing and soil preparation by primary and secondary cultivations by hand or machine (e.g. ploughing or digging, harrowing or raking).

Lesson Note

Land preparation is the foundation of every crop. A well prepared seedbed lets seeds make good contact with moist soil, lets air and water move through the ground, buries weeds and crop remains, and gives young roots a soft path to grow into. In the exam, 0600 rewards candidates who can list the operations in the right order and, more importantly, explain what each one does to the soil and to the crop. That is the difference between a thin answer and a strong one.
