Business - 4BS1 PearsonEdexcel

Classification Of Businesses

Overview

Every product you buy has passed through a chain of business activities before it reaches your hands. The raw cotton was grown on a farm, woven into fabric at a factory, and sold to you by a retailer. Each of those steps belongs to a different sector of the economy, and understanding how they connect is fundamental to understanding how business works.

In this lesson you will learn how businesses are classified into primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors, how these sectors depend on one another, and why the balance between them shifts as a country develops. You will also explore the distinction between the public and private sectors, a framework that appears regularly in Edexcel exam questions.

Objectives

  1. Understand primary, secondary and tertiary activities: primary sector (extracting raw materials from the earth), secondary sector (converting raw materials into finished or semi-finished goods), tertiary sector (provision of a wide variety of services)

Lesson Note

Think about the last meal you ate. Farmers grew the ingredients, a factory processed and packaged them, and a supermarket stocked the shelves so you could pick them up. Three types of business activity, working in sequence, turned raw materials into the product on your plate. Economists group every business in the world into one of three sectors based on which part of that chain it occupies.
