Firms And Production

Overview

Why does one factory churn out millions of identical bottles while a tailor sews a single suit by hand? Firms choose how to produce, and that choice shapes their costs, their output and the jobs they create. Behind every product lies a decision about which method, and how much, to produce.

In this lesson you will learn what influences how much firms produce, the different methods of production they can choose, and a distinction examiners love to test: production versus productivity. You will also see how investment can raise productivity and why that matters for the whole economy.

Objectives

  1. influences to include demand for the product, the price of different factors of production, their availability and their productivity
  2. reasons for adopting the different forms of production
  3. advantages and disadvantages of the different forms of production
  4. the difference between production and productivity
  5. influences on production and productivity
  6. effects of changes in investment on productivity

Lesson Note

Firms turn resources into the goods and services we use, and how efficiently they do it decides prices, wages and living standards. The production versus productivity distinction is one of the most commonly tested ideas in the course, and getting it right, along with the influences on production, unlocks marks across the whole firms section.
