Sexual Reproduction In Mammals

Overview

Every calf, lamb and piglet on a farm is the result of sexual reproduction, and a farmer who understands it can plan breeding, time births for the best season, and raise strong young that survive. From mating and fertilisation, through pregnancy and birth, to the first vital drink of milk, each stage has a job to do, and each is a point where good management makes the difference between profit and loss.

In this lesson you will study sexual reproduction in a named mammalian farm animal, the cow. You will learn the parts of the male and female reproductive systems and what they do, follow the process of fertilisation and birth, and understand the care of the newborn: why lactation matters, what weaning means, and why the first milk, colostrum, can decide whether a young animal lives or dies.

Objectives

  1. (a) describe the reproductive systems (male and female) of a named mammalian farm animal.
  2. (b) describe the processes of fertilisation and birth in a named mammalian farm animal.
  3. (c) define the terms weaning and lactation and understand the importance of colostrum.

Lesson Note

Reproduction is how a livestock herd grows and improves. A farmer who knows the reproductive cycle can decide when to mate animals, feed a pregnant female correctly, prepare for the birth, and make sure the newborn gets the care it needs in its first hours. Many young animals are lost simply because they did not receive colostrum in time, so this is practical knowledge that saves animals and money. It is also a frequent 0600 topic, with questions on the reproductive organs, the breeding cycle, and the meaning of terms such as weaning and lactation.
