Types Of Services

Overview

From buying groceries at midnight to checking a bank balance on a bus, the internet has turned services that once required a physical visit into experiences you can access from any connected device. Understanding what each type of online service offers, and how it works behind the scenes, is central to the Edexcel ICT specification.

In this lesson you will explore eight categories of online service, from shopping sites and booking systems to auction platforms and entertainment providers. You will learn to identify the features that make each service effective, compare online and traditional alternatives, and practise the kind of scenario questions that appear on Paper 1.

Objectives

  1. Understand what online services are offered by shopping sites, booking systems for travel, leisure and entertainment, banks, education and training providers, gaming sites, news and other information providers, auction sites, entertainment providers

Lesson Note

A generation ago, booking a holiday meant visiting a travel agent, checking your bank balance required a trip to the branch, and buying a rare vinyl record involved scouring second-hand shops in person. Today, all of these tasks can be completed in seconds from a smartphone. Online services have not just replicated their physical counterparts; they have added features like real-time stock alerts, personalised recommendations, and 24/7 availability that physical outlets cannot match.
