Grammar, Punctuation And Spelling

Overview

AO5 is worth 18 per cent of this qualification on its own, which is more than AO1 and more than AO3, and it is the objective almost nobody revises. Part of the reason is that it sounds like a warning rather than a skill: spelling, punctuation and grammar, the things you are supposed to have absorbed by now. Read the wording again and you will find that most of it is not about avoiding mistakes at all.

This note treats AO5 as craft. You will learn what each of the four sentence types is actually for, why a short sentence lands after long ones, which punctuation marks change meaning rather than merely tidying it, the two errors that cost more marks than all the others combined, and a proofreading method that works in six minutes when you are tired and have stopped being able to see your own page.

Objectives

  1. Write clearly, using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures, with appropriate paragraphing
  2. Use spelling, punctuation and grammar accurately
