Note And Gap Completion

Overview

In this exercise you are given a set of notes about a talk with words missing, and you fill each gap as you listen. It looks like a fill-in-the-blank, but it is really three skills at once: following the talk closely enough to know when each answer is coming, catching the exact word or short phrase, and writing it in the grammatical form that fits the gap. A right idea in the wrong form still loses the mark.

This note shows you how to read the note frame before the recording starts so you can predict the kind of word each gap needs, how to use the words already printed as signposts, and how to check that what you have written actually fits when you read the whole line back. Examiner feedback pinpoints the exact slips that cost marks here, and how to avoid every one of them.

Objectives

  1. Complete notes or gaps with the precise word or short phrase required.
  2. Follow the structure of a talk to know when each answer is coming.
  3. Spell key answers clearly and keep them within the space given.

Lesson Note

Exercise 2 of the Listening paper presents the content of a talk as a set of notes with several gaps. You hear the talk twice and write the missing word or short phrase in each gap. The notes are printed in order, so they walk through the talk from start to finish; this is your map. Each gap targets one precise detail, just like Exercise 1, but now the answer also has to slot grammatically into a printed sentence.
