Poetry Analysis
Overview
Section A of your Poetry and Prose paper gives you forty five minutes, thirty marks and a single anthology text printed in full on the page in front of you. If a poem comes up, everything you need to score is already there in black and white. Nothing is being tested from memory. What is being tested is whether you can read a poem as something that was built, and then say what the building does to a reader.
This note teaches that reading. You will learn the four lanes a poem can be examined along, how to trace the movement of a poem instead of touring its features, why the word how in the question changes everything, and why comparison, which earns so much on your other paper, earns you absolutely nothing here.
