Overview

What if you could take a single gene from one organism and place it inside another to give it entirely new capabilities? That is exactly what genetic modification makes possible. Scientists now routinely insert human genes into bacteria to manufacture life-saving medicines, and engineer crop plants to resist pests or survive drought.

Lesson Note

In 1982, genetically engineered bacteria produced the first synthetic human insulin, replacing insulin extracted from pig and cow pancreases. Today, nearly all insulin used by diabetics worldwide comes from modified bacteria grown in industrial fermenters. The technique that made this possible - cutting a gene from one species and splicing it into another - is the foundation of modern genetic engineering.
