Level Of Organisation

Overview

A single heart cell cannot pump blood around the body on its own. Thousands of cardiac muscle cells, working together as a tissue, contract in rhythm. Those tissues combine into the heart organ, which forms part of the circulatory system. This layered arrangement, from the smallest organelle to the largest organ system, is how complex organisms achieve things no single cell could manage alone.

In this lesson you will learn the five levels of organisation in multicellular organisms: organelles, cells, tissues, organs and organ systems. You will explore examples from both animals and plants and practise identifying each level in diagrams.

Unicellular organisms carry out every life process within a single cell. Multicellular organisms take a different approach: their cells specialise and work together at increasing levels of complexity. Understanding these levels helps you see how a whole organism functions as an integrated unit.
