Movement Of Substances Into And Out Of Cells

Overview

Cells are not sealed boxes. Every second, molecules flow in and out through the cell membrane, delivering nutrients and removing waste. Without this constant traffic, cells could not respire, grow, or communicate with their neighbours.

In this lesson you will explore three transport mechanisms - diffusion, osmosis, and active transport - and learn how factors such as surface area, temperature, and concentration gradient control how quickly substances move. These concepts underpin much of biology, from gas exchange in the lungs to water uptake by plant roots.

  2. Understand how factors affect the rate of movement of substances into and out of cells, including the effects of surface area to volume ratio, distance, temperature and concentration gradient

Lesson Note

A living cell is surrounded by a partially permeable membrane - it lets some molecules through and blocks others. Three processes move substances across this barrier: diffusion, osmosis, and active transport. The first two are passive (no energy input), while the third requires energy from respiration.
