Securing Data On A Network, Including The Internet

Overview

Every time data travels across a network it passes through cables, wireless signals, routers, and servers that other people could potentially intercept. The methods used to keep that data safe range from simple passwords to sophisticated encryption algorithms, and choosing the right combination depends on what you are protecting and who you are protecting it from.

In this lesson you will explore seven layers of network security: authentication, firewalls, encryption (including WEP, WPA, and public key cryptography), VPNs, file access rights, transaction logs, and backup strategies. You will learn how to match each method to a real scenario, a skill that Edexcel tests in both Paper 1 and Paper 2.

Objectives

  1. Know about and understand the use of log-ins and passwords, firewalls, WEP/WPA, encryption, VPN, file access rights, transaction logs and backups
  2. Be able to select suitable methods of securing data for a particular context

Lesson Note

A school network might hold exam results, medical records, and staff payroll data. A hospital network carries patient histories. An online retailer handles thousands of credit card numbers every hour. In every case, the consequences of a breach are serious: identity theft, financial loss, legal penalties, and damaged trust. Security is not an optional extra; it is a requirement that shapes how every network is designed and managed.
