Group 1 (alkali Metals)

Overview

The alkali metals in Group 1 of the periodic table are among the most reactive metals you will study. Drop a small piece of lithium into water and it fizzes gently; do the same with potassium and it bursts into lilac flames. These dramatic reactions follow a clear pattern that reveals how the periodic table organises elements by their behaviour.

In this lesson you will explore how lithium, sodium, and potassium react with water and air, explain the trend in reactivity using electronic configuration, and learn how to predict the properties of alkali metals lower in the group such as rubidium and caesium.

Objectives

  1. Understand how the similarities in the reactions of these elements with water provide evidence for their recognition as a family of elements
  2. Understand how the differences between the reactions of these elements with air and water provide evidence for the trend in reactivity in Group 1
  3. Use knowledge of trends in Group 1 to predict the properties of other alkali metals

Lesson Note

Cut a piece of sodium with a knife and the fresh surface is shiny and silver. Leave it exposed to air for a few seconds and a dull grey coating of oxide appears. These metals react so readily with air and water that they must be stored under oil. Their shared behaviour makes them a clear chemical family, and the periodic table places them together in Group 1.
