Noble Gases

Overview

On the far right of the periodic table sits a group of elements so reluctant to react that they were once called the inert gases: helium, neon, argon and the rest. They float as single atoms, glow in coloured lights and fill the spaces where ordinary air would cause trouble. Their secret is in their electron arrangement.

In this lesson you will learn that the Group VIII noble gases are unreactive, monatomic gases, and you will explain that unreactivity in terms of their electronic configuration. This idea, a full outer shell, is the key to understanding why other elements bond at all.

Lesson Note

The noble gases explain one of chemistry's deepest ideas: why elements react. Because a full outer electron shell makes the noble gases so stable and unreactive, every other element can be seen as reacting in order to reach the same stable arrangement.
