Analysing Unseen Poetry
Overview
Somewhere in the middle of your Literature exam a poem you have never read will be printed in front of you, by a poet you may never have heard of, and you will have about twenty five minutes to say something intelligent about it. No revision notes cover it. No teacher has walked you through it. That sounds like the cruellest question on the paper, and it is actually the fairest: everybody in the room starts level.
What separates a top answer from a weak one is not talent or luck. It is having a reliable procedure for the first eight minutes, so that panic never gets a foothold, and knowing exactly what kind of sentence earns marks once you start writing. This note gives you both and then makes you practise them on real poems.
