Geometrical Constructions

Overview

Some geometry is done not by calculation but by careful drawing. With nothing more than a ruler, a protractor and a pair of compasses you can measure an angle, build an accurate triangle from three lengths, and unfold a solid into a flat net. These are practical skills, and accuracy is everything.

In this lesson you will learn to measure and draw lines and angles, to construct a triangle from three given sides using compass arcs, and to draw and read the nets of simple solids. Each method is set out as a clear, ordered list of steps you can follow with instruments in hand.

Objectives

  1. Measure and draw lines and angles.
  2. Construct a triangle, given the lengths of all sides, using a ruler and pair of compasses only.
  3. Draw, use and interpret nets.

Lesson Note

Constructions train the precision that real design depends on. An engineer's drawing, a dressmaker's pattern and an architect's plan all rely on lengths and angles being exactly right, because a small error early on grows into a large one later. Learning to measure and construct carefully by hand builds the habit of accuracy that every practical use of geometry demands.
