Externally-set Assignment
Overview
On 2 January, Pearson releases one broad thematic starting point to every Fine Art candidate in the world, and from that moment the second half of your grade is running. What follows is a preparatory period your centre organises, and then ten hours of supervised, unaided studio work in which the finished response has to be made. Not planned. Made.
Ten hours sounds generous until you are standing in front of a wet canvas at the end of session three with a passage that will not dry and no access to the work until next week. This note is about the two things that decide Fine Art assignments: what you put into the preparatory studies, which are frozen the instant the clock starts, and how you design a painting or a sculpture that can actually be finished under supervision in four sittings.
Objectives
- Present personal responses to an externally-set broad-based thematic starting point
- Complete preparatory studies in response to the externally-set theme
- Complete a 10-hour period of sustained focus under supervised conditions
- Submit three sheets of supporting studies (maximum A2) and one sheet of final outcome(s) (maximum A2)
