Magnetism

Overview

Magnets are part of everyday life, from fridge magnets to the motors inside your phone. Understanding magnetic fields, poles and induced magnetism is essential for the electromagnetism section that follows.

In this lesson you will learn how magnets interact, the difference between hard and soft magnetic materials, what magnetic field lines represent, how magnetism can be induced, and how to investigate and produce uniform magnetic field patterns.

Objectives

  1. Know that magnets repel and attract other magnets and attract magnetic substances
  2. Describe the properties of magnetically hard and soft materials
  3. Understand the term magnetic field line
  4. Know that magnetism is induced in some materials when they are placed in a magnetic field
  5. Investigate the magnetic field pattern for a permanent bar magnet and between two bar magnets
  6. Describe how to use two permanent magnets to produce a uniform magnetic field pattern

Lesson Note

Every magnet has a north pole and a south pole. Cut a magnet in half and you get two smaller magnets, each with its own north and south. The invisible region around a magnet where it exerts a force is called a magnetic field, and understanding how to map and use that field is the foundation of electromagnetism.
