The Main Landforms Associated With These Processes

Overview

A river is a sculptor working in slow motion. With the same handful of tools, erosion, transport and deposition, it cuts plunging waterfalls in the hills, swings lazy meanders across the lowlands, and fans out fertile deltas at the sea. Read the shape of a valley and you can read the river's energy, its rock, and its age.

This lesson takes you landform by landform, from the V-shaped valleys and waterfalls of the upper course to the meanders, oxbow lakes, levees, floodplains and deltas of the lower course. For each one you will learn its key features and, just as importantly, the step-by-step process that forms it, with real examples such as Niagara and Victoria Falls.

Objectives

  1. The characteristics and formation of landforms: waterfalls, rapids, gorges, V-shaped valleys, meanders, oxbow lakes, levées, floodplains, deltas, interlocking spurs, potholes.

Lesson Note

River landforms are a favourite of examiners because they test whether you can link a process to a shape. It is not enough to name a waterfall or a meander; you must explain, step by step, how erosion and deposition build it. Master a clear formation sequence for each landform and you can answer both short questions and extended responses with confidence. A labelled diagram often earns marks here, so practise sketching as well as writing.
