Reactivity Series

Overview

Some metals react violently the moment they touch water. Others sit in the ground for centuries without corroding. Arranging metals from the most reactive to the least reactive gives the reactivity series - a ranking that explains everything from how metals are extracted to why ships are fitted with zinc blocks.

In this lesson you will learn the order of the reactivity series, how it is deduced from reactions with water and acids, and how it connects to displacement reactions, rusting, and rust prevention.

Objectives

  1. Understand how metals can be arranged in a reactivity series based on their reactions with water, and dilute hydrochloric or sulfuric acid
  2. Know the order of reactivity of these metals: potassium, sodium, lithium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, iron, copper, silver, gold
  3. Know the conditions under which iron rusts
  4. Understand how the rusting of iron may be prevented by barrier methods and galvanising

Lesson Note

Not all metals behave the same way in chemical reactions. Potassium explodes on contact with water; gold does not react at all. Chemists arrange metals in order of reactivity by observing how vigorously they react with water and with dilute acids. The result is the reactivity series.
