Cyber Security

Overview

The internet connects billions of people, but the same network that lets you shop, chat and learn also lets criminals try to steal your data, hijack your accounts and bring down websites. Knowing how these attacks work, and what you can do to stop them, is one of the most important and most tested skills in computer science today.

In this lesson you will learn the aim and the method behind a range of cyber security threats, from brute-force attacks and data interception to DDoS, hacking, malware, phishing, pharming and social engineering, and then the solutions that defend against them, such as strong passwords, firewalls, encryption, proxy servers, anti-malware and access levels. By the end you should be able to match the right solution to each threat and explain why it works.

Objectives

  1. 1 Describe the processes involved in, and the aim of carrying out, a range of cyber security threats
  2. 2 Explain how a range of solutions are used to help keep data safe from security threats

Lesson Note

No single security measure is ever 100% effective, and attackers keep finding new methods, so the safest systems layer several solutions together. Understanding both the threat and the defence lets you protect real data and answer exam questions that almost always ask you to describe an attack and then explain a matching solution.
