Standard Form

Overview

Standard form is a compact way of writing very large or very small numbers. Scientists use it to express quantities like the mass of the Earth or the size of a virus without writing long strings of zeros.

You will learn how to convert between ordinary numbers and standard form, and how to multiply, divide, add and subtract numbers expressed this way, both with and without a calculator.

Objectives

  1. Calculate with and interpret numbers in the form a x 10^n where n is an integer and 1 <= a < 10
  2. [Higher] Solve problems involving standard form

Lesson Note

The distance from the Earth to the Sun is about 150 000 000 km. The width of a human hair is about 0.000 08 m. Writing out all those zeros is slow and error-prone. Standard form fixes this by expressing every number as a value between 1 and 10, multiplied by a power of 10.
