Chemical Tests

Overview

How do you prove that the gas bubbling from a reaction is hydrogen and not oxygen? How can you tell whether an unknown powder contains copper or sodium? Chemistry has a toolkit of simple tests that identify specific gases, ions, and substances quickly and reliably.

In this lesson you will learn the standard tests for five gases, the flame test for metal ions, the carbonate test, and the water test. These tests are examined frequently and are essential practical skills.

Objectives

  1. Describe tests for these gases: hydrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, ammonia and chlorine
  2. Describe how to carry out a flame test
  3. Know the colours formed in flame tests for Li+, Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Cu2+
  4. Describe a test for CO32- using hydrochloric acid and identifying the gas evolved
  5. Describe a test for the presence of water using anhydrous copper(II) sulfate

Lesson Note

Many chemical reactions produce colourless gases or form solutions that look identical. A chemist cannot simply look at a gas and name it. Instead, specific chemical tests give characteristic results that confirm the identity of a substance.
