The Impacts Of Climate Change At A Range Of Geographic Scales

Overview

A warming of a degree or two may sound small, but it ripples outward into rising seas, fiercer heatwaves, shifting rainfall and failing harvests. The same warming that bleaches a coral reef in Australia can also flood a delta in Bangladesh and dry out a farm in the Sahel. The impacts are not evenly shared.

This lesson works through the present day and predicted future impacts of climate change at three scales: local, national and global. You will learn to read a climate graph, weigh impacts on people and on the environment, and explain why low lying and low income countries are often hit hardest.

Objectives

  1. The present day and predicted future impacts of climate change. For example, rising sea levels, and changes to global temperature, weather patterns, and food production.

Lesson Note

Knowing the causes of climate change is only half the story; examiners also want you to explain its impacts. The strongest answers describe specific consequences, link them to the warming that drives them, and recognise that impacts differ from place to place and over time. Think in terms of scale (local, national, global) and of who is affected (people and the natural environment).
