Group 1 (alkali Metals) - Lithium, Sodium And Potassium

Overview

Drop a tiny piece of potassium into water and it bursts into a lilac flame, skittering across the surface while hydrogen gas fizzes away. The alkali metals in Group 1 of the Periodic Table are among the most reactive elements, and their behaviour reveals powerful patterns about how the table is organised.

In this lesson you will compare the reactions of lithium, sodium, and potassium with water and air, explain the trends down the group, and learn to predict the properties of other Group 1 elements you have not seen.

Objectives

  1. Understand how the similarities in the reactions of these elements with water provide evidence for their recognition as a family of elements
  2. Understand how the differences between the reactions of these elements with air and water provide evidence for the trend in reactivity in Group 1
  3. Use knowledge of trends in Group 1 to predict the properties of other alkali metals

Lesson Note

Group 1 sits on the far left of the Periodic Table. Its members - lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), caesium (Cs), and francium (Fr) - are called the alkali metals because they react with water to form alkaline solutions (metal hydroxides). They all share one electron in their outer shell, which makes them highly reactive.
