Draw, Interpret And Understand Simple Organisational Charts:

Overview

How does a business of two thousand people stop itself descending into chaos? It draws a picture: an organisation chart that shows who reports to whom, who is responsible for what, and how an instruction travels from the boardroom to the shop floor. Read one well and you can see the whole shape of a company at a glance.

In this lesson you will learn to draw and interpret organisation charts, and to use the three terms examiners test most: levels of hierarchy, span of control and chain of command. You will see why a tall structure feels very different to work in from a flat one, and how each suits a different kind of business.

Objectives

  1. Simple hierarchical structures: levels of hierarchy, span of control, chain of command e.g. tall/short
  2. Roles and responsibilities of directors, managers, supervisors, other employees in an organisation and inter-relationships between them

Lesson Note

The structure of an organisation decides how fast decisions are made, how closely staff are supervised, and how clearly responsibility is shared. Examiners give you a chart and ask you to read it, then to judge whether the structure suits the business. Master the vocabulary here and those marks are straightforward.
