Functions

Overview

A function is a rule that takes an input, does something to it, and gives back exactly one output. Function notation, the compact \(f(x)\) style, is the language that lets us name a rule, apply it to any value, and talk about it precisely. It is one of the most important ideas in all of mathematics.

In this lesson you will learn what function notation means, how to read \(f(x)\) as the output for an input \(x\), and how to evaluate a function at a particular value by substitution. These ideas open the door to graphs, transformations and the more advanced function work later in the course.
