How Did The Second World War In The Asia–Pacific Develop?

Overview

Early on a Sunday morning in December 1941, waves of Japanese aircraft swept over the United States Pacific Fleet at anchor in Pearl Harbor. In a single stroke Japan turned a regional struggle in Asia into a world war, and for six months its forces seemed unbeatable, sweeping across Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Then, off a tiny atoll called Midway, four Japanese aircraft carriers went to the bottom in a few hours, and the war began to swing the other way.

This lesson explains how relations between Japan and the United States broke down, why the gamble at Pearl Harbor at first paid off so handsomely, how Japan conquered so much so quickly, and why Midway in June 1942 became the turning point of the Pacific war. These are the causes, the consequences and the moment of reversal that Cambridge examiners want you to be able to explain and weigh.

Objectives

  1. How did US-Japanese relationships deteriorate?
  2. How successful was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor?
  3. Why were the Japanese successful in the initial stages of the war?
  4. Why was the Battle of Midway a turning point?

Lesson Note

The Pacific war can look like a confusing list of islands and battles. It becomes clear once you focus on a single question: how did a country as small as Japan come so close to dominating the Pacific, and why did that dominance not last? Answer that and the Cambridge questions fall into place, because they keep returning to the same themes: the causes of the war with the United States, the reasons for Japan's early successes, and why Midway turned the tide.
