Forces And Movement

Overview

Every time you push a door, kick a ball or brake a bicycle, forces are at work changing the way things move. Understanding how forces combine, how they link to acceleration, and why heavy lorries need longer to stop gives you the tools to explain motion in everyday life and in the exam.

In this lesson you will learn how to identify and combine forces, apply Newton's laws including \(F = ma\), distinguish weight from mass, explain terminal velocity, and analyse the factors that affect vehicle stopping distances - all key topics for Paper 3 (Physics).

Objectives

  1. Describe the effects of forces between bodies such as changes in speed, shape or direction
  2. Identify different types of force such as gravitational or electrostatic
  3. Know that friction is a force that opposes motion
  4. Know and use the relationship between unbalanced force, mass and acceleration: F = m x a
  5. Know and use the relationship between weight, mass and gravitational field strength: W = m x g
  6. Know that the stopping distance of a vehicle is made up of the sum of the thinking distance and the braking distance
  7. Describe the factors affecting vehicle stopping distance, including speed, mass, road condition and reaction time

Lesson Note

A goalkeeper diving for the ball, a rocket lifting off, a cyclist coasting to a halt - every change in speed, direction or shape involves a force. A force is a push or pull measured in newtons (N). When a force acts on a body it can change its speed, change its direction, or change its shape.
