Use Of Technology In Accounting

Overview

A hundred years ago, every ledger, every day book and every trial balance was written out by hand in ink, and a single arithmetic slip could take hours to trace. Today, accounting software totals a trial balance in a fraction of a second. Technology has not changed what accounting concepts require, but it has transformed how quickly, accurately and safely a business can apply them.

In this lesson you will learn the benefits accounting software and spreadsheets bring to a business, the data security risks that come with storing financial information digitally, including loss, unauthorised access and breaches of confidentiality, and the hardware and software methods businesses use to protect that data.

Objectives

  1. Explain the benefits of using technology within accounting, including accounting software and spreadsheets
  2. Explain the issues regarding the security of data, including data loss, access and confidentiality
  3. Explain the methods of protecting data, including hardware and software

Lesson Note

Every business, however small, now has a choice about how it keeps its accounting records: entirely on paper, using general purpose spreadsheet software, or using dedicated accounting software built specifically to apply the rules of double-entry bookkeeping. The choice affects speed, accuracy, cost and the risks a business must manage. This lesson looks at the advantages technology brings, and the new responsibilities it creates around keeping financial data safe.
