Measures, Money And Accuracy

Overview

A recipe scaled from four servings to eleven, a currency converted for a holiday budget, a bridge span measured to the nearest centimetre: every real measurement or amount of money needs a consistent set of units and an honest statement of how precise it really is.

This topic ties together unit conversions, money calculations, the four ways of writing the same proportion (fraction, decimal, percentage, ratio), rounding to a given accuracy, the upper and lower bounds that a rounded measurement could hide, and standard form for very large or very small numbers.

Objectives

  1. Carry out calculations using standard units of mass, length, area, volume and capacity, time and average speed using metric and SI units
  2. Carry out calculations using money, including converting between currencies
  3. Interchange fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions and percentages, selecting the most appropriate to given situations
  4. Use the four operations with fractions and decimals, and use percentages, ratio and proportion in problems
  5. Express numbers to a given degree of accuracy including a given number of decimal places or significant figures
  6. Solve problems using upper and lower bounds where values are given to a degree of accuracy
  7. Use and solve problems involving numbers in standard form

Lesson Note

A parcel's weight in kilograms, a journey time worked out from a distance and a speed, a holiday budget split between two currencies: none of these calculations mean anything unless the units line up and the level of precision is stated honestly. This topic is the practical arithmetic that sits underneath almost every other IGCSE topic.
